CHALLENGE: A large national grocery chain received a directive from their Corporate Sustainability Group to reduce energy use in their stores by 15% over the course of the following three years. When reviewing their heating and cooling patterns, they realized their receiving areas were the largest drain on their energy consumption. These areas needed to maintain specific temperatures to protect against the loss of perishable products. A large portion of their temperature control issues came from their receiving doors, and it wasn’t just when the doors were open. A majority of the temperature loss occurred while the doors were closed.
ACTION: We developed a plan to ensure the correct products were provided to reduce the overall spend on maintaining temperature within their stores, and most importantly, the amount of energy consumed. We visited some of their stores to assess the situation and determine the best solution. They were thrilled that we wanted to take the time to do this instead of just selling them the option they asked for.
RESULT: Our customer was shocked to learn that the majority of their temperature losses came from air infiltration and not transfer of heat through thermal conduction. Because of this, just increasing the R-Value of the product they were using (replacing a standard rolling steel door with an insulated rolling steel door) would not solve their problem. We introduced them to our Thermiser Max product, which is the first insulated rolling door to meet ASRAE® 90.1 and 2012 IECC Air Infiltration requirements. It also offers superior sealing and insulation. After Implementing our highly effective solution, our customers saw a 94% decrease in air infiltration. This helped them achieve their company initiative of decreasing energy consumption by 15% in three years. In fact, they ended up surpassing their goal in two years, which also resulted in reduced energy costs. Their reduction in energy consumption allowed them to position themselves as an eco-friendly company interested in the environment. Our customer’s payback period was around 2 years based on the significant energy savings they have realized.
