ICC- and FEMA-Compliant Rolling Storm Shutters

Rolling storm shutters are vital — and sometimes mandatory — safety features that you can install in a wide range of structures. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) publication P-361 and the most recent International Code Council (ICC) 500 guidelines require shelters to withstand the high winds expected with hurricanes and tornadoes, and the StormDefender® meets every demand. If your state follows the 2015 edition or a later publication of the ICC 500, depending on your location, you may be required to install a storm shelter if you operate a:

Police station.
Fire, EMS or rescue station.
911 or emergency call center.
K-12 school with over 50 occupants.

These roll-up storm shutters can stand up against 250 mph winds and take the force of a 100 mph impact. They also meet the minimum mandated ICC-500 time requirements by providing shelter long enough to get through a tornado. Every award-winning StormDefender® has features such as:

Patent-pending windlocks. These doors come with windlock bars that run alongside the guides. Each slat is modified to rest in the windlock bar for added stability in severe storms and high-pressure events.
Safety alarms. When the shutters need to close, the StormDefender® triggers a strobe light and audible horn. The combined alarms work to ensure everyone has a chance to clear the area and move to safety.
Attractive hoods. StormDefender® doors stay out of sight when stored by coiling into galvanized steel hoods for protection. We color match all hoods to your custom door color for an aesthetically pleasing package.
Durable construction. The shutter curtain and bottom bar feature high-quality 12-gauge steel. Our SpectraShield® powder coating in a gray finish protects the doors from damage.
Reliable motors. Our exclusive AlarmGard™ rolling door motors offer the option for connection to an alarm system. You can also default to the closed position in the event of a power failure using optional battery backup power.

You can even install fire-rated StormDefender® doors equipped with smoke gaskets that meet UL10B three-hour fire standards and UL1784 requirements for smoke-resistance for greater safety.

Maximum size of 14’ x 16’.

Maximum width between 13’ 10” and 14’ depending on configuration. Please contact the factory if maximum width required is more than 13’ 10” to ensure proper configuration.

Curtain – 12 gauge 4” face flat Steel slat with SpectraShield® powder coat in gray.

Guides – Steel with powder coating to match the curtain.

Bottom Bar – 12 gauge 4” face steel bottom bar with powder coat to match the curtain.

Available Operators

The StormDefender door features the AlarmGard system with fail-safe operation. It can be connected directly to the building alarm system, deploying the doors upon activation

Smoother Installation and easy maintenance: Designed with a flexible black rubber TPE material, our new sensing edge has two fins that conform to variations in the floor on both the interior and exterior of your door or grille. This ensures a secure seal without requiring you to overset the bottom door limit.
